Here is the whole secret, all the soul of our life: it is He Whom we follow. We might meditate ever so long on Humility and it would not make us humble. We are too poor in virtue. But if we see our Lord born upon straw, hiding Himself for thirty years in the obscurity of a workman's life, and dying on the Cross, then we understand, we hunger and thirst to be like Him, we embrace Him with all the love we have, through all our humiliations, all crosses, all submission.
We do not want to be humiliated, we have no wish to be poor, or obedient, but we do want to be like Him, and then, love for Him makes us love all that He loved.
If we draw back before an act of Humility, it is because we have not seen Jesus Christ, we have not known Him, we have not known what it is to love Him. If we had seen Him, and loved Him, we would have to put a veto to keep us from going to extremes of self-hatred and sacrifice.
There are burning lamps in the Sacred Heart. Souls can kindle themselves there if they will. It is the prize of Humility, the prize of self-forgetfulness. They really burn with love and are blessed, who desire to annihilate themselves for Jesus Christ. Then they will not be content with bearing a little wound of self-love, they want a deep humiliation, real suffering. They cannot do without those two great vital things―Humiliation and Sacrifice.
Yet souls flee from humiliation! If they only knew what a great treasure it is! Jesus takes delight in a soul habitually humble, or who is always in an atmosphere of humility. On the contrary, upon the soul that humbles herself occasionally, He smiles for the moment; but she does not attract His complacency as does she who is habitually humble.
Why is it that so few souls walk with a resolute step in the way of Love? It is because few enter with generosity into the way of sacrifice. Just so far as the soul walks in the way of Sacrifice, so far does she walk in the way of Love! If she is constant in Sacrifice, she is constant in Love; if she falters in Sacrifice, she falters, moreover, in Love, and will make little progress.
