The Annunciation - 1850

The Angel Gabriel offers Mary a lily - a flower which denotes purity - as he asks Mary if she will bear the Christ child.

T H E   A N N U N C I A T I O N
Dante Gabriel Rosetti (1850)

O Mother! I could weep for mirth,
Joy fills my heart so fast;
My soul to-day is heaven on earth,
Oh! could the transport last!
I think of thee, and who thou art,
Thy majesty, thy state;
And I keep sighing in my heart―
Immaculate, immaculate!
