The Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

The Our Father is the prayer Jesus Himself taught His disciples. In it, we honor God as our loving Father, ask that His will be done, trust Him for our daily needs, seek forgiveness, and ask for protection from sin and evil. It is a simple and complete prayer of faith, humility, and trust.

The painting shown during Kathy’s recording is a devotional image of Christ on the Cross by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, the great Spanish Baroque painter. Murillo’s quiet, solemn treatment of the Crucifixion draws our attention to the love and sacrifice of Jesus. The image is especially fitting for the Our Father, reminding us that Christ not only taught us how to pray, but also showed perfect obedience to the Father’s will through His sacrifice on the Cross.
